Wishard announces plan for LEED Silver certification

Construction, LEED Certified, News | April 15, 2010 | brandon

America’s third-largest safety net hospital system – and Marion County’s longest-tenured – will rank among its most advanced in energy efficiency and environmental design when The New Wishard Hospital opens at the end of 2013.

Mayor Gregory Ballard and Marion County Health Department Director Dr. Virginia Caine joined Wishard officials on Wednesday afternoon to announce that the new facilities would pursue Silver certification, the third-highest level on the United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) rating scale. Accomplishing the feat would make Wishard one of only 10 newly constructed hospitals in America to achieve LEED® certification at the level of Silver or higher, and the only one of its kind in Indiana.

Indianapolis Mayor Gregory A. Ballard commends Wishard for its plans to build The New Wishard to be LEED Silver certified by the United States Green Building Council.

Indianapolis Mayor Gregory A. Ballard commends Wishard for its plans to build The New Wishard to be LEED Silver certified by the United States Green Building Council.

“The New Wishard project is a central component to the future of sustainability in Indianapolis and represents our commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier, more energy-efficient city,” said Mayor Ballard. “I commend Wishard’s plan to build one of the nation’s most environmentally friendly facilities as we strive to become America’s most livable big city and take a leading role in creating jobs for our growing economy.”

Wishard makes the announcement as workers continue demolition on the vacant former Larue D. Carter Psychiatric Hospital at the site of the new hospital.

“When so many of us stood in support of a new Wishard last fall, we weren’t merely supporting a better hospital – we were supporting a healthier, better Indianapolis community,” said Dr. Caine. “Days like today show even more how Wishard will improve the health and wellness of Indianapolis and Marion County.”

Wishard’s decision to reuse an old urban site is one of the many credits the new facilities achieve for their environmental sustainability.

“The New Wishard hospital that the voters of Marion County overwhelmingly approved will be a beacon of health and wellness for Indianapolis,” said Matthew Gutwein, president and CEO of Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County, which operates Wishard. “Wishard is committed to exercising environmental stewardship so that Indianapolis becomes a more livable and sustainable city.”

“Wishard’s focus is people. We must consider the needs not only of our current patients but also of future generations of our city’s residents,” said Dr. Lisa Harris, CEO and medical director of Wishard Health Services. “Our priority is on the overall health of the community in the broadest terms. Wishard’s decision to build an environmentally friendly hospital is critical to that mission.”

Plans for The New Wishard include numerous design elements and operations that will contribute to its certification as one of America’s greenest new hospitals including pollution control during construction, energy savings through efficient design, water usage savings, outside air circulation and features for staff including bike racks, showers and designated parking for alternative fuel vehicles and high occupancy carpool and vanpool vehicles.

The New Wishard design elements are described as planned and may change due to construction and other factors. Certification is subject to USGBC audit upon project completion.

LEED® is an internationally-recognized building certification providing third-party verification that a building was designed and constructed using strategies aimed at improving performance in energy savings, water efficiency, carbon emissions reduction, improved indoor air quality and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.

The project to construct a new Wishard will create 4,400 jobs and will transform the landscape of healthcare in Indianapolis.

Marion County voters approved construction of a new Wishard in the Nov. 3, 2009 election, with 85 percent support for the measure, and Wishard began work immediately. Wishard plans to complete the new facility at the end 2013.

Wishard awards first construction contract to local firm

FA Wilhelm wins package that includes parking garage, plans to achieve City goals for minority-, women- and veteran-owned business participation

Wishard awarded the initial construction bid package on the project to build a new Wishard – a hospital for all of Indianapolis – to FA Wilhelm Construction Company, Inc. on Tuesday, Feb. 16. The package also includes construction of site utilities.

“We are ecstatic to be able to find the lowest responsive bidder right here in Indianapolis, where this project can serve the community right now in the form of jobs and economic development,” said Matthew Gutwein, President and CEO of Health and Hospital Corporation, which operates Wishard.

Wilhelm and its subcontractors will begin construction in April and plan to complete the package in January, 2012. The local firm, headquartered just east of downtown Indianapolis on Prospect Street, will work with City of Indianapolis-certified minority-, women- and veteran-owned businesses to achieve a participation level that meets Wishard’s goals for the project.

“We know that Indianapolis is home to many great companies, so it’s no surprise that a strong local firm like FA Wilhelm is able to provide the best overall package, including one that creates jobs right here in Indianapolis, and one built to achieve minority-, women- and veteran-owned business participation levels at or above the City’s own goals,” said Mayor Gregory Ballard.

Wilhelm plans to subcontract with several businesses which are certified with the City, at levels of 15.6 percent for minority-owned businesses, 8 percent for women-owned and 3.2 percent for veteran-owned firms. The package, at $27.5 million, is well within Wishard’s budget for the package and in keeping with the project mandate to be on-budget and on-time.

“This contract is another key component to meeting our goal to build a hospital for the people of Indianapolis, by the people of Indianapolis,” said Dr. Lisa Harris, CEO and Medical Director of Wishard Health Services. “Wishard is its people, and the new hospital will be founded as much on the hard work of the men and women who build it as those who will staff it and those it will serve.”

The six-level, cast-in-place, post-tensioned concrete garage is at the center of the package, which also includes an element of site utilities construction. The garage will be used for the parking of patient, staff and visitor vehicles at the new Wishard, and it will stand immediately adjacent to the new hospital to maximize convenience and accessibility for patients, visitors and staff. The total parking space in this garage is equivalent to about 18 football fields.

“Parking is a challenge now and its level of availability will continue to fluctuate during construction, so we are addressing that right away with the construction of this parking garage,” Harris said. “Our goals of efficiency also encompass design, as the garage will utilize an open-core light well to provide natural light and ventilation.”

The project to construct a new Wishard will create 4,400 jobs and will transform the landscape of health care in Indianapolis.

Marion County voters approved construction of a new Wishard in the Nov. 3 election, with 85 percent support for the measure, and Wishard began work immediately. Wishard plans to complete the new facility at the end 2013.

Demolition phase underway

The large-scale exterior demolition phase of the project to construct a new Wishard for all of Indianapolis began in early February. The vacant former Larue D. Carter Psychiatric Hospital will be the first structure to come down on the site of the new Wishard.

Local contractor Denney Excavating will carry out the destructive demolition process, a months-long task that entails use of heavy machinery, including hydraulic-powered steel shears and concrete-crushing jaws to pinch structural members. Workers operated several pieces of equipment to begin toppling the upper floors at the end of the east wings of the long-vacant structure. They will dismantle the building in chunks from the outer wings toward the center and from the upper floors moving down to the foundation.

Parking garage to go up first

The first structure to rise out of the site of the new Wishard will b ea 2,300-car parking garage, the construction of which is included in the initial construction bid packaged released in December.

The six-level, cast-in-place, post-tensioned concrete structure will stand immediately adjacent to the new hospital and eventually will connect to the ambulatory care and administrative office buildings.

The garage has a square footage equal to 18 football fields, with a footprint of 240 feet by 609 feet. It will have three entries and be served by six elevators at three locations.

The garage will feature an open-air design including a light well through its core, which will utilize natural lighting and ventilation. It also features flat levels to accommodate individuals with mobility challenges.

Wishard releases initial construction bid package

Construction, News | | brandon

The new Wishard Hospital construction project moves forward today with the release of the first construction bid package, which includes a 2,300-car parking garage.

“We are very pleased with the progress we’ve made over the past four weeks and excited to enter this important stage in building a new Wishard,” said Matthew Gutwein, president and CEO of Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County. “Our team was fully prepared and began immediately upon passage of the referendum to execute our plan to build an efficient and cost-effective new hospital.”

Wishard will construct the six-level parking garage as the first of five buildings at the new site. The parking garage will have three entrances and three stair/elevator towers and will stand on the west side of the new Wishard campus. The garage will accommodate Wishard employees and visitors to the new hospital, as well as provide parking for the Richard L. Roudebush VA Hospital. Wishard’s development will also create an additional 1,500 surface parking spaces upon completion.

“We recognize parking is at a premium in this area and are working with IUPUI to minimize the impact on parking through the construction phase,” said Dr. Lisa Harris, Wishard Health Services CEO and medical director. “The garage will go up first to alleviate the impact of construction on parking and ultimately accommodate Wishard’s parking needs.”
